Unless you sign up for a tour that takes you by bus and organizes everything for you, Morocco is not easy to get around. It is, however, a beautiful country and worth the effort to get off the beaten path. Below is the desert outpost called Ait Benhaddou. The closest town, called Ouarzazate, was nothing more than beautiful kasbahs, distant Atlas Mountains, dust, and sand before Hollywood found out about it. Now, its surroundings serve as the backdrop for many of the desert scenes we see in today's movies. Movies such as Lawrence of Arabia, Cleopatra, Kundun, Alexander the Great, Kingdom of Heaven, Babel, Body of Lies, Prince of Persia, The Way Back and the Gladiator were all shot in this desert oasis.
